We even had Rob & Rijkels with us at this one! The journey there was so funny when we got to Grantham….round & round that roundabout whilst they caught up with us 😉 We were still outside when Queen Adreena started. I was gutted about that. But, we did see a little part of their set (I think)
I guess Andy was tired…& i decided to stick my finger up his nose 😉 (Cheers to Ady for photos)
I only went for the one day. It’s hard to believe there were so few people in the crowd with camcorders. This is my angle. Considering my camcorder didn’t have any stabilization & i was quite far back, i think it’s pretty reasonable 🙂 I didn’t manage to shoot the whole show though as it started raining…i was prepared to trash the Cam for this unique show…the rain got in it & it shut down 🙁 But, with the joys of the internet & the hard core Metallica trading community, the other main angle (shoots more screen) & mine have been mixed together & even soundboard audio is added. Nice.
The set up for this show was ridiculous ! They had a large ” D-ring”, with majority of us OUTSIDE the D ring. They could have allowed MANY more in there. So, effectively, we were all far away from the stage. The weather was awful. Cradle of Filth were utter shite. We had the majority of different weathers during their set sun, rain, hail stones etc….all we needed was a plague of locusts lol. To me, the day just didn’t work. Not only that, after experiencing this silly barrier set up, the following year i didn’t go & no one filmed Maiden (that i know of)
Well this was a bit of a bad joke. Via the Metallica fan club, i’d got meet n greets. A local friend was meant to go, but dropped out. So my girlfriend went instead. Big mistake! We waited around for hours only to see James & Jason. We missed most of the bands! The missus was in one of her moods & she wanted to leave. So we did.Only saw about 30mins of Tallica i think…
The biggest, the best & unfortunately the worst also 🙁 The biggest ever attendance at Monsters. Unfortunately, it got too dangerous. During Guns set the whole crowd towards the front moved. 2 people got crushed under foot & died. It’s the most frightened i’ve ever been at a gig. Was hard to keep stood up & not get trampled even towards the side… Maiden were fantastic.
After the tragedy in ’88 there were lessons learned about crowd safety. There was a full inquiry about the events. You can view this online here :
This resulted in “The guide to health, safety & welfare at pop concerts & similar events”. In the industry, it’s referred to as “The Purple Guide “. There used to be a copy of this online & it was free to view, but now, it seems you have to pay.
Brilliant day with great bands. Def Leppard was a very emotional affair as it was the “Return Of The Thunder God”. Scorpions had amazing sound quality, as did Ozzy. Andrew was fucked up BEFORE we even got in there ! A mini bus load of us went to this one. At the time, some of us were into rum & black, Andy just over did it ! He ended up falling asleep, laying on his side (recovery position almost lol) & vomitting…..there was dark coloured dribbles down his cheeks. When he actually came around, he was shaking. Either due to being cold or, more likely, maybe even alcohol poisoning ! Obviously, when he asked me to hold him, i told him to fuck off! lol Over the years, both he & the other lads, “progressed” to taking in boxes of wine ! Myself, i didn’t really induldge as i’d mostly be either driving us there or needed a clear head to record the sets 😉
