I met my friend Julia, who i knew via our love of Skunk Anansie, at this show. She brought her friend Laura along also. It was her birthday soon i recall. Well, with Henning being so cool, i was able to give the girls guest passes πŸ™‚ During this show the band jammed ” Candy Love”. It was a bit of fun for sure. Unfortunately, Dennis had an accident when a drum stick broke & went in his eye. By strange coincedence, Julias dad is a doctor, so he checked him out ! Julia has some fantastic photos from backstage, but, it’s not really fair to upload some of them lol (The band were already tired & there’s one of Henning where he looks like a zombie -sorry mate- & one of Stude messing around with yogurt lol

This was Guanos last show of 2000 & it was a special one for sure. Whilst it wasn’t a huge crowd, it was a great appreciative crowd (as they mostly are in the UK). Sandra really got into this show. She actually crowd surfed ! Up till now, this was only the 2nd time she’d ever done that…it has to be a good crowd for that to happen πŸ˜‰ A clip of my footage was added to the DVD they later released. The guys did an extended jam at the end of Lords…very cool. Another VERY cool thing was they jammed an unreleased song which would eventually change & become “Kiss The Dawn”. Yeah, London deserved all these treats for sure. Funny thing was, to start off, i don’t think Sandra realized i was filming this night. Once she knew, it was a case of ” Simon, here’s my home address, please send me a copy !” So yeah, a great way to finish the year for all involved πŸ™‚ (Scan of the note from Sandra. Obviously i covered up the address πŸ˜‰Β Scans0513

Guano Apes, Lost Prophets, Miocene , Earthtone 9, @ Rios,Bradford 17-12-00

I used to like the old Rios venue. Saw a few bands there. When i arrived for this show, i couldn’t help notice the tour bus was nowhere to be seen. Got me a bit worried. Turns out it had broken down somewhere. For whatever reason, they couldn’t get it repaired for a day or so, so they cancelled their show in Brighton. This was probably the only time i wasn’t too bothered about the cancellation (Man, i had more than my fair share of those!) as it was a hell of a long drive & the weather was cold/freezing.

Guano Apes, Lost Prophets, Miocene , Earthtone 9, @ TJs,Newport, Wales 16-12-00

I look back at this & am surprised i’d drive this far, but, that’s how much i loved the band back then ! This was a tiny & legendary club ( I say was, because it has since closed down). I met Claire there…& a lass called Rose (where are you nowadays Rose??)Β A great little gig with lots of energy both on & off stage. As Henning would describe it ” A punk rock gig”. There were lots of crowd surfers but it was all done with affection. I guess this was Guanos first encounter with a “real” audience in the UK πŸ˜‰ As happened on all the tour, most people were there to see Guano Apes & once they’d finished, majority left the buildings. I kinda felt sorry for Earthtone 9 . I made my own little highlights video of the event. From that, i had someone contact me who was making a documentary type feature asking if they could use my footage. They only had seconds, but it was still nice.

(The few seconds of what i filmed are at 02.40mins)

Great memories from this tour. Even though Earthtone9 were the headliners, most night, people would often leave after Guano Apes played. There was a buzz about GA. They were bringing in the audiences. Couple of stand out memories from the first night in Norwich : When they were setting up the merch desk, Ian Watkins (vocalist of Lostprophets) asked if he could put their badges on the table “That’s all we have!”. It pains me to say, i actually did like Lostprophets…who would have thought Watson was such a sick cunt!?? A nicer memory, was going across the road to a cafe with Sandra & Henning. Sandra asked if she should tip them there πŸ˜‰ Oh yeah, this was also where i passed over a bunch of Beatles bootlegs for Henning to give to Fabio (he’s a massive Beatles fan). Later, the whole band & crew went for a meal in town before the show. Ah such cool memories again πŸ™‚ The gig was great. I enjoyed all bands…except Earthtone9 lol

After the Highfields Festival we traveled onwards through the night to the Terremoto Festival in Hamburg. Waking up next morning, the first thing i see is Sandra looking out of the bus at something…that something was Fred Durst of Limp Bizkit , she’s quite a fan….& even rock stars can get star struck πŸ˜‰ I think it might have been his birthday as i recall someone giving him a video camera as i walked past to catering. I’m also pretty sure that this festival was Limp Bizkits only show in Germany this year, so, no doubt that would have brought in some of the crowd. Actually, it’s a fantastic line up here today ! Henning had given me an advance copy of the DVD & later in the day Sandra & her sister watched it on the bus. I was lucky to be able to meet Dave Grohl & Brian Molko & have a nice chat with Dom (Muse) about how they were doing in the States etc. I was already a Β fan of Muse after seeing them open for Skunk Anansie in ’99. My friend Fanny arrived later in the day so we both got to have some photos with the stars. We watched some of Guanos set from on the side stage then some from the photo pit. When everything was over, Fanny gave Henning a lift to the hotel he was staying at (The others took the bus back home). Next day i flew back to the UK. Driving home, my car exhaust partially came off ! IΒ used the pass band to tie it up to get me back home haha

Met the GA crew previous night in Gottingen & traveled with them.Stopped off at some club in Dortmund & i was introduced to Jagermeister-on an empty stomach! Some stayed & traveled next day (sore heads!) but i got back on bus as already messed up enough! One stand out memory of the gig was Matt Bellamy (Muse) just going mental trashing his amps.Backstage, Dom (Muse drums) said he wasn’t stir crazy/burnt out,but i had my doubts! Muse were great!

Guano Apes, Uncle Ho, @ Turbinenhalle, Oberhausen , Germany, 5-6-00

Scans0667

Strange venue in that it was in like a factory. Also, the concert room was a few floors off the ground. Very industrial…turbinenhalle πŸ˜‰ The film crew were still around for this one. Interestingly, on the clip i posted, where Stude is after his beer , that’s from Oberhausen, after the gig. Then the next shot is in Hamburg πŸ™‚ There was also a record signing session in the “Centro” shopping centre. I didn’t realise it at the time, but, Jagermeister had a shop in there! I coulda got some cool merchandise πŸ˜‰ After this one there was a group photo of band crew etc getting some kind of award. Henning said i should join the photo ,but i just didn’t feel right if i’m honest.

Guano Apes, Uncle Ho, @ Gross Freiheit, Hamburg, Germany, 4-6-00

There was a day off between Berlin & Hamburg gigs. We all traveled to Hamburg & stayed in a very swish hotel (once again, pinch me!”) Carlos Santana was in town, so a few went to see his show.Β 196303_1625882682345_5351431_n

The show was filmed for a mini documentary on Guano Apes. I asked the film crew what station it would be broadcast on. Upon hearing i’d traveled over from the UK, the director asked if he could do a short interview with me! It was so funny as i’d never in my wildest dreams expected anything like this could happen. I mean, i’m already living life well what with travelling on the tour bus, having a AAA tour pass & now this ?!!
