Upon entering the venue, poor old DJ slipped & made a mess of his arm. There are some who say it could have been deliberate to get some “treatment” off the young female nurse 😉2009_0718guanomaresvivas00092009_0718guanomaresvivas00142009_0718guanomaresvivas0018

I think this is the only time i’ve met Daniela. Thanks to Jorge for helping out with the pass situation 😉

Guano Apes were good, but the Scorpions totally kicked their asses 😉

COMING BACK

From Eindhoven (EIN) to London Stansted (STN)
Sun, 12Jul09 Flight FR9274 Depart EIN at 19:35 and arrive STN at 19:35

Well this one has the potential of probably being the biggest fan meeting to date on the reunion tour. Its gonna be great to see the others that didn’t manage to make any shows previously. Not only that, but a good friend of mine from the UK was also going to this show…on his motorbike! Respect to ya Allyn for the effort & welcome to the Guano Maniacs family 🙂

The idea was put forward a while back to make some new “Guano Apes Maniacs” shirts. Seemed most everyone of the old crew were interested. Problem was, there ended up being so many great designs (We’ve got some great artists in the GA community) that it was obvious it would be hard for everyone to agree on one design. We all had a couple of meetings in the GA chat room & well, lets say things moved slowly 😉 In the end, thanks to the perseverance of Joana, a combination of a couple of main designs was chosen.
The wonderful Kel got to work & printed shirts & even managed to get them delivered a couple of days before Bospop festival! Thanks so much Kel, you rock!

As ever when i have an early flight, i dont bother going to bed the night before. So my awake time starts on Friday 08AM & will probably go through till Sunday early am. I leave home around 2am & it takes just over 2 hours to arrive parking & transfer to airport. One of the advantages of travelling so late (er early) is not much traffic on roads so journey doesn’t get delayed 🙂
Flight goes well & Joana is there waiting for me @ the airport. Joana knew she’d have a real long flight/stay over so, as she also doesn’t like camping & really wanted some sleep,we’re sharing hotel room. Only problem is, we cannot check in until 2pm. Well, nothing lost by asking, we 1st go to hotel & ask if its possible to check in earlier. As luck would have it, we could. Not only that, but, we got a free complimentary drink thrown in. I had a cold Corona to start the day of nicely 🙂
We then meet Michel @ the station & go grab some food. Wonder what my choice was? 😉 Then we walk a few more metres & grab some beerz 🙂 Get a txt from Emi saying they’ve arrived @ the hotel.Walking back,Michel has to pop into an electronics shop to show them why he’s a manager! (well, no not quite that) Get to hotel & find, what we think is, Emis car EMPTY! Then they appear from the hotel…just used the facilities 🙂 Its great to see Emi again after what? 4 years? Shes still got that infectious smile.  After a brief tour of Eindhoven,in search of cashpoint, we’re on our way to Bospop in the “GA Taxi” with the classic sounds of Version 2.0 blastin out.
Upon arrival @ festival i decide to leave camcorder in Emis car as i don’t know if I’ve got permission to film todays show. Was a good choice to leave it as,it looks like i cannot do this one as i don’t have a photo pass. Oh well,it will be good to experience the show different to how i usually do, but just hope they don’t do anything special (understatement of the year!) that doesn’t get captured 😉
Walking to the entrance,i’m sure i recognise someone in the distance : Its Sahnie, Simone & a couple more of the GA Maniacs. Again, haven’t seen them since the farewell tour. Have a brief chat & then we go in festival arena. First things first, we go get tokens for the beerz.
As expected, the the GA camping crew are all down on the front rows. After a short time,DJ, Marc,  & Alex come to join our little drinking party. DJs also got the rest of the tshirts with him for the girls. Unfortunately  Gabi couldn’t make it here due to being ill. Certainly added to the party. What about another “blast from the past” Alex was with them.  I last saw him & the GA aftershow party in NL 03. Seem to recall i was quite drunk chatting to him then & nothing seems to have changed (from me) as its same again! Alex has changed though, i know he was tall before, but i’m sure hes shot up over last few years (or maybe I’ve shrunk?) Well, the drinks were flowing & we were just having our own little party only listening to the real important music from the stage : GUUUUS! It was such a fun relaxed atmosphere. Everyone just foolin around & having a laugh.

The new Guano Maniacs shirts were a hit for sure. We had a few people approach us asking where to buy them from! Maybe they should be added to the offical merch 😉
The weather was a bit strange. It was nice & warm but a couple of times the heavens just opened up with a quick downpour that finished as quickly as it started! Not that the weather was bothering me. Hell no, i was pretty drunk having a laugh with my friends & waiting to see Guanos! Well, after some time i noticed i’d got a txt. It was from Henning saying that a photo pass was waiting for me. Fantastic stuff, but i wonder how i will cope fiming as i am a little drunk 🙂 Emi takes me back to her car & i collect my gear in preparation for an “interesting” filming experience 😉
Was quite funny coming back into festival as of course the guys searched my bag again. After pointing out to him i’d got a camcorder (& maybe he noticed i was somewhat “refreshed”) he asked if i had any guns or bombs with me !
Once back in i pop backstage to try find the guys. I bump into Dennis as he goes to check something on the stage. I tell him i’m a bit pissed. To which he replies “Why what happened?” Haha hes thinking of the American version of pissed (Angry) & not the English version (Drunk) 🙂 Well, i didn’t see anyone else so had a quick look onstage & then went back out to the front & waited for the show to start. I’ve got to admit, with this being a short, non-headline, set, i wasn’t really expecting too much. However Henning had posted on the GA site to expect some surprises. But damn, we got more than that!

As ever, the band come onstage with no great fanfare or anything. Sandra asks “Are you ready for some rock show”? I think its the affirmative for the first few rows of the crowd 🙂 After Money & Milk, Sandra says “How you doing tonight?…Well its not night yet ” 🙂 During Quietly she struggles with the high parts so sings it differently (think it happens most times nowadays)

After Quietly, Sandra says “No Speech baby!” & the band go into… “Open your Eyes” I dont think many noticed that though 😉
Looking out into the crowd its entertaining to see Benoit just losing his mind & getting totally lost in the moment. He has his own special moves for each song it seems. it’s quite funny to see 😉
As the photographers have all left the pit i’m the only one left in there (apart from security) & i decide i’ll try filming from the podium @ side of stage. I think if it wasn’t for the fact i’d had a few drinks, i would have stayed down on the floor. Normally i’d feel very self conscious in that situation but not now. I’m just pleased i managed to climb up without falling down lol. Filming when have had a drink can be “interesting” 😉

Bospop646592404_5_Vedp[1]

Next, we actually DO get No Speech. What a surpise that is! Fantastic they brought it back, but i do think it needs a bit more rehearsal. Pretty In Scarlet goes well & then we get the mother of all surprises!
Sandra : “So the next song is a song we really haven’t played in a very long time”. Then there’s a cry from *someone* in the audience shouting “Cuts! ” Sandra “No its not Cuts !” Then Henning starts the intro… my god? Really? Can it be? Hell yeah its Never fookin Born. As Henning plays the intro he looks over to me with a knowing smile. He knows how much I’ve wanted to hear this song live. I just get totally lost in the song & truth be told kind of forget that i’m filming.Yup, its one of those moments where i get all emotional. I start thinking how not only have we got GA back, but how amazing it is we also get new songs, old songs that haven’t been played for years & a renewed vitality within the band that is infectious. Life is damn sweet! (& yes, there was a brief tear of joy). Ok,if ya wanna be picky, technically Never Born wasn’t perfect, but who cares? We got to hear it!

From the old to the new, next up is Hyves song. I just love this one & its so obvious the band have such fun playing this one. Seems to go over well with most crowds & the Bospop audience are quick to pick up on the audience clap along section. Then another surprise : Wash it Down ! Hell this is really turning out to be an amazing gig. Shame on me for even considering thinking earlier that it might not be up to much (I must remember this is the “new” Guano Apes,so should expect great things!) This really is old school GA. Bloody great. Sandra seems possessed as she goes to the floor & out come the guttural roars lol

Couple of songs later & we get another surprise : LIAL !? Good to hear it again. I wonder if this is being played more as a warm up for when they visit Portugal next week? After that, when Sandra says “This is Sugar Skin” there’s one hell of a scream from the front row. It sounds like they’re screaming “Myyyyy sooong”. I still think it was Pezi, especially judging by her freaking out at the beginning ! 🙂 There was a lovely little moment when Sandra went over to Henning & they shared a smile *find photo*

Another fun live song, “Underwear”, is up next. Sandra says “..this is about Underwear…boys who like to wear girls underwear. I know there are some..even in my band (said as she looks over at Stude) I just love this song. As Miss Gogan says, “Its a good one to shake your ass too”. Not that i did though i’m sure a few down the front did for you Nadine 🙂
Henning has a little laugh doing a riff as Sandra says “4 more songs”. Henning then goes to the mic & says “Big in Japan!”.  *find photo*  He smiles over to the band & says to the crowd “Sorry, i’m wrong. Once in a while i wanna make an announcement & i’m totally wrong,so…i’m sorry, my fault, its Break the Line”. (Well at least it wasnt captured on film eh mate ?) They tear through the song. Interestingly, on one of the lines of “We have to go” she changed it to “I have to go”.
As they then start into “Big in Japan” Sandra says(laughing) “So Henning its your turn!!”  All right guys are you ready for 2 more songs? These are the last 2 for you. Dennis starts a kick drum clap along & after a bit the audience seems to have reacted enough so they’ll start the song. It is of course, the killer new song “All i wanna do”. This is such a fun song for everyone.

Before Lords, Dennis asks the crowd “Are you tired or what?!!” Here’s the last chance to freak out with us,cos this is the last song. As expected, the crowd just goes off. There’s a real funny moment near the end when they’ve (mostly) finished the song. The guys carry on a little jamming & Dennis says “Are you ready?” to which Sandra replies “Cmon lets get it on one more time!” Dennis : Are you ready? Sandra- yeah Dennis- yeah! Sandra- you really ready? A small thing but such fun interaction between them. When they crashed back into the final refrain, Sandra had a bottle of water in hand which went all over the place. Good girl that she is, when they finished, she got a towel to slightly soak it up 🙂

After the gigs finished, i have a small moment of paranoia! I *think* i might have filmed the show without my external microphone being switched on! Problem is, cos my camcorder is really on its way out, i cannot playback the tape to check (Yeah i need to buy a new one for the next tour lol)
I go see the Maniacs & everyone is just elated by the show. No one expected so many cool surprises & was just bowed over by everything.

Final thoughts :
So this is the 3rd show ive been to since the reunion & again everything is so positive. From the news posting before this gig we knew it could be an interesting set list, but i would never have expected this!
For myself, hearing “Never Born” was worth the price of admission alone! That was just a dream come true to finally see them play that live. But also the surprises of No Speech,Wash it Down & LIAL was very cool. So not only did we get a set with the “newer forward thinking Guano Apes”, we also got some old school classics. Damn, the best of both worlds 🙂

Now this one was VERY special. The second show since the reunion (I look at the one in Portugal as a “warm-up” & this one the real deal) A few of the hard core GA fans made the journey for this one & were rewarded with one of the best shows ever ! What a great great set list ! I got to film the whole thing & made a mini documentary of the visit etc. The only downside was that my camcorder/mic had a problem, so it was full of dropouts. With HUGE thanks to Ingo/the band, i was sent the soundboard audio, so i mixed it with my audience audio, for a nice ambiance.2009 30-5 Guano Sofia

A little special something i made…

————————————————————————————————-

Edited 30-5-19 : I found the original write up on another PC !

THIS is THE GA show I’ve been looking forward to most, for a few reasons : Firstly, it’s the only indoor show on the summer tour. Secondly, I’ve never seen such great reactions of fans in the forum. Knowing the band are also very excited to be playing in Sofia, this really has the makings of something special. Oh yeah, a funny coincidence; earlier in the year I’d got in touch with Alberto (he used to be in Underwater Circus some years back & I’d filmed them a couple of times) & he mentioned he’d be joining the Apes in Sofia. I was unsure how many songs he’d play with them, but, it would certainly add something to the mix.
Of course, many of us also thought Sofia would be the 1st reunion gig, but then a festival in Portugal was added at last minute. In hindsight, its probably best they got a show under their belts before this one.

Again, a bunch of the Usual Suspects are travelling to the show. We will arrive in Sofia at different times/days, eventually meeting on show day.
For the 1st time, I’m using Gatwick airport to depart. I estimated it would take around 4hours to drive from Boston to there. With a very early morning departure, its not worth going to bed on Friday. I leave around midnight & it takes around 3 & half hours to get to Gatwick. What a great start : Looking at departures board, I see my flight is delayed 45minutes!
Eventually we leave & the pilot tells us he’s made a request to ATC to fly a different route to try make up time ! I think it worked 🙂
Upon arrival in Sofia airport, Joana (Guanasic) is still waiting there for me. We then get a taxi sorted out (with Joana taking no crap from the woman on service desk “Hey we were told it should be around 10Levas,, not 15!). How nice it was to travel in a taxi with no rear seatbelts (well, there were belts, but no where to fasten them!) & a crazy driver whilst the weather is throwing it down!
Still, he didn’t rip us off & got us to “Hostel Mostel” ok. Once through the small front door, we first see Jasi coming to greet us. We’re then shown to the room we’re sharing with the others. After some catching up, Marc says the plan is to go to the hall around 3pm where he’ll meet the promoter Angela. With some time to kill, I ask if anyone would like to have a quick look at the Braga film I’ve brought to give the band? Stupid question! 😛 But there’s a problem; no ones brought their laptop & all the computers in the hostel only have CD drives. Then Jasi spies an unlucky victim 🙂 There’s a guy sat engrossed in stuff he’s doing on his laptop. Cue Jasi casually going over & sitting next to him all nice. Soon enough, she’s persuaded him to try playing the disc on his laptop (Me :”Dude, you’ve lost that for the afternoon now!” Actually, he was a real nice guy & it wasn’t so much of a problem for him to let others use his laptop. Just funny how it all came about) So everyone’s sat around the table reliving the show. Occasionally stopping the disc to comment on how songs are played different etc. Of course, in Braga there were problems with the stage barrier & security. So as the show replays, the further in it gets, the less smiles there on everyone’s faces. But I think everyone still enjoyed seeing some of the show again. The guy on hostel reception orders us a couple of taxis & we’re on our way to Universada hall. It’s still bloody raining. Once there, we somehow split up into 2 groups & some people go in the hall whilst others are left outside wondering what’s happening. I go try track down the others & see DJ, Silvia & Lucky wandering off towards some shops. Eventually everyone leaves the hall & we go in search of the others. Soon find ’em in a small café. Whilst the cakes looked appetising, I fancied something a bit more substantial (beer? lol) as hadn’t eaten anything all day. We then go try find a pub that some of the guys had already visited. In the end, not finding it, we go to a pizza place real close to the venue.
Whilst the “salads” in there were questionable, the pizza I had went down a treat. I’m now ready for the show.
The venue is a nice size with a raised seating area. My initial thought is to go in the seats & film part of the show from there & the rest down the front.

The support act are quite heavy & get a decent reaction from the crowd. It’s great seeing the whole place pretty much packed even before GA come on. The only problem though is my ideal filming spot is now no good. Before they finish their set, I decide to nip backstage to say hello to the guys in GA. Dennis says I’m getting fat & Stude says I’m going bald. Yeah I love you too guys lol. Have a brief chat with Alberto, quickly say hi to Henning & then leave everyone to prepare for the show. I head down the front & see there’s already many photographers in the pit. Decide to stay side stage for a while. Then, a couple of people on the front row ask me if they can buy my WOATL shirt! I tell them it’s old merch & no longer available. “But what about new stuff? Can we buy that?” I didn’t realise, but, the band didn’t bring any merch with them. Just think how much they could have sold to an audience that was so appreciative of GA visiting Sofia. Maybe next time eh ? 😉
GIG
—-
Before they’re onstage the crowd is already quite vocal. Once YCSM kicks in, the whole damn place is just rocking. The cheer at end of song is deafening. During “Quietly”, there’s a great photo opportunity for the many photographers in the pit, when Sandra lies on her back & carries on singing the song. Maybe not the most flattering angle , but still captures the moment. Sandra says how it’s the first time for GA to be playing in Sofia & that they “feel like virgins”.
“I guess that nobody here is a virgin anymore? No way! So we should Do it Again right?” I think Albertos backing vocals fit very nicely with this one. Next it’s back to old school Guano Apes , as they go straight into “Open your Eyes”. OMFG this just rocks! Looking back & seeing the audience loose their minds is just amazing This crowd is also bloody LOUD!
When Henning plays the intro to “Pretty in Scarlet” there’s a huge scream from the audience. Obviously this is a favourite 🙂 Hearing the crowd singing along so loudly with Sandra is just beautiful.
“Candy Love” is a lot of fun. Already this is a fave song in the set for myself. “If you ain’t sweating, you’re doing nothin!” There’s a funny moment when Sandra goes side stage & turns her backside to Alberto (?) with a “Kiss my ass” kind of gesture. Funny as hell.
Afterwards, Sandra says she sees to many shirts & asks the guys to take them off & a lot of them do. (hmm discrimination, what about the girls 🙂 ) I guess a few people would be going home without a shirt as quite a few were thrown to the front!
Now everyone’s good for “Diokahn”. Damn this is so heavy. Before “Dick” Sandra says “Its the longest one in this band” Hmm what could she mean? Again, this so rocks so much. Sandras screams are so powerful. Certainly nothing seems to be held back, she just going for it. Stude has some kind of technical problems but still has a smile on his face.
Towards the end of “Underwear” there’s a slight mess up, but its soon turned around & I doubt many noticed it. “Break the Line” is sounding better than in Braga. It’s still kind of strange listening to this song nowadays as, even though its a fantastic song, I still cannot help slightly associating it with the bad times. I know I shouldn’t, but just cannot help it.
After this, Dennis starts the drum intro to “Allies”. This is such a big song live. Absolutely love Studes bass sound at the beginning. A funny thing happens whilst filming which I almost missed: Often I’ll have one eye on the subject I’m filming, whilst the other is looking elsewhere to see where I’m going next. Well, I’m stood directly in front of Stefan, he’s filling the shot & I’m looking over at Henning/Sandra. I didn’t notice it straight away, but, Stefan moves forward & starts pulling faces into the camera. I didn’t have it framed correctly, but just caught it. Again, when they “restart” the song at the end,its killer. Just love to see Sandra throwing shapes & generally going crazy 😉

Well, it’s only the 2nd time I’ve heard/seen the new song “Hives Song” & it’s becoming a favourite already. When Stude goes over to Hennings mic , for the “hey hey hey!” part its very cool. Again, just seeing the fun they’re having with it, is just great. Also, when Sandra pushes both Henning & Stefan its such a laugh. I just love little moments like this. Oh also Hennings little Chuck Berry duck walk has to be mentioned 😉
Next they seem unsure if it’s “Sorry” or “Scratch the Bitch” 😉 next. They do Scratch & Sandra does some interesting vocal change in the song. Next up, Henning mentions they’ve brought a friend with them; Alberto. Sandra says “He’s brought just for the girls (& under her breath says to him “Get your top off!”) She then introduces him as Alfonzo! “Yeah! That’s not my name!” They do a great version of “Sorry”. After my initial doubts about the song, I really love it. Actually think of all Sandras solo songs they’ve played, this one works the best in the set.A rare thing happens; Sandra goes down to the crowd & gets on the barrier. Then moves along a little & is amongst the Maniacs. No doubt this will forever be a memorable moment for Joana as she got to sing a bit of the chorus. Nice one!

There’s a great version of “Big In Japan” & then they’ve gone from the stage. But there’s gonna be encores right? The crowd is deafening! When the band comes back on stage, Henning says “MY god they’re so loud!” Sandra gestures “One more? Two more?” Stefan teases us with a snippet of Rain. Sandra then says there 2 more songs. We didn’t realise it at the time, but, “Sugar Skin” was on the setlist next, followed by “Lords of the Boards” & “All I Wanna Do”. They drop “Sugar Skin” & switch round Lords/all i wanna do. This is first time hearing All I wanna. I’d been told that it was a very up-tempo rocker & it sure turned out to be so! I love how they started it with everyone crowding around Dennis. This song just kicks. I could just imagine the guys jamming this when they first got back together. Again, the word here is FUN!

Before you know it, its the final song of the night. What could it be except for “Lords of the Boards”. The crowd just goes off one more time.

When they finish the song, Henning gives the nod to Alberto to have his fun & stage dive. Very cool. Finally Stude smashes his guitar into the bass drum & that’s all folks! Sandra comes back onstage with her camera & gets the guys to pose for the group photo with the great Sofia crowd behind them.

All i can say is WOW! Just WOW ! This show was just bloody amazing. The crowd, the band, everything just was the best. This is up there amongst my fave ever GA shows. Sofia, you did yourself proud. Guano Apes you showed everyone what a fantastic “new” band you are. I’m just gobsmacked. Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed this . My fave band are back in so many ways.

AFTERSHOW
———-
I go see my friends & everyone’s euphoric. Briefly taking with Jasi when she suddenly dives back into the dispersing crowd. What was that all about? Few mins later she reappears. Turns out there was one selfish little git in the crowd that decided he’d steal the drumstick Jasi had caught. Why is it there’s always one bad apple…? Hey “Big man”, if by chance you’re reading this, I hope you’re proud of the fact you attacked a girl just for a drum stick. Idiot. Don’t bother going to the next GA show as tools like you are not welcome. *rant over*
We’re all chatting at the stage barrier when Henning comes out front. Seems the feelings mutual : The band really enjoyed the show as much as us lot. The first visit of GA to Bulgaria has made a huge impression on EVERYONE.
We wander backstage to see other band members chatting, signing autographs & posing for photos. Smiles everywhere. After sometime we realise we should try getting a couple of taxis to go to the aftershow party at club….. Let the “fun” begin !

TAXI
——-
Upon leaving the venue, a taxi pulls up across the other side of the busy road. By time 2nd group have crossed, another taxi is there. 1st taxi pulls off pretty quickly. Now this is where the evening goes downhill ! I think we might be about to “have some fun” when I say to the others “Did you notice the other taxi went off in opposite direction to ours?” Lucky rightly replies “There are many ways to get to same destination”. My fears are soon realised; we got the worse taxi in Sofia! Our driver is talking on his mobile phone & pulls up a couple of times. Is he lost? Asking a friend for directions? Who knows, its not like he cares about his passengers or anything. Well, after driving & stopping 3 times, we’re sat there & he’s looking at us as if to say “Hey we’re here! You should now that!” I cannot see the club & ask where it is. The driver just points vaguely. Before I know it, someone’s paid him & were out of taxi. Hmm so where is the place ?? We ask a couple of passers by. One doesn’t know & another points us in opposite direction to where our wonderful driver did! After sometime wandering aimlessly getting no closer to the venue, I’m getting seriously pissed off. Tiredness is kicking in (its early Sunday morning now & I’ve been awake since Friday AM !) & I just don’t want to be here. Beginning to think the best option would be to go back to the hostel…but sods law says we’ll get the only taxi driver in Sofia who doesn’t know where the place is 🙂 I must apologise to the others for my crappy attitude. As I said, tiredness was hitting me big time, coupled with being in a situation that could have been easily avoidable ( “Hey! Follow that taxi!”) makes for a very grumpy Simon!
So, one last ditch attempt : Another taxi to take us to the club! Well, this time at least he points to a club. But its obviously not what we want. As luck would have it, we are close. Hurrah! It’s in street behind this place. FINALLY!! Or maybe not….

We see the place is quite busy outside. I notice a couple of girls that I’d seen backstage at the venue. Hmm, why are they outside? Club age restrictions maybe? Then we notice the guys on doors are turning people away! What?!! Ok, I go to the door. “We’re here for the afterparty..” He doesn’t understand me & gestures I talk with the other knucklehead on the door. Might as well be talking to a brick wall (probably has more brain cells!) as instantly he has an aggressive attitude ” You no come in!” I’m as good as pushed away. Lol when I thought the night couldn’t get worse… Then it comes to me; surely by now the others must be wondering where we’ve got to? I mean, I don’t know how long we’ve been in the twilight zone but it certainly seems ages to me (But I may be wrong as I’ve just lost all track of time) Check to see if any msgs. Nothing. Next try phone Jasi & it goes straight to answerphone. Ok, the music’s loud, maybe cannot hear. Next try Marcs phone. It rings a couple of times then is cut off. Finally!! A few mins later Marcs @ the door & gesturing to the knuckleheads to let us in. Follow him in to this packed out place. we’re like sardines in a tin. Everyone’s who’s already here is partying away.
I have trouble getting into the correct mind space. Again, tiredness is playing a part. Damn I wish I could just get hammered like everyone else!! But I cannot cos I have to drive when back in UK tommorow…erm I mean later today!
Well, with everyone having so much fun, it eventually rubs off on me & I get into the moment. Yeah, finally relaxing lol It’s cool to see all the band members & crew here just letting their hair down (Sure there could be a joke here) Stude is maybe the most drunk, yet at the same time we have a very coherent conversation about the band getting back together, what he does during time off (congratulations on the 2nd child ) & all points in between. It really is a party atmosphere in here. Kinda funny to see the various band members reactions when a GA song is played & volume is turned down for chorus whilst most everyone in the place sings along. Again, its pretty magical. There’s even a mini mosh pit going on!! damn I wish I’d shot video or something .

Well, time gets on & eventually the band leaves as do many of the revellers. Mindful of the earlier taxi fiasco, I suggest it might be an idea to be thinking of leaving soon. Hell I don’t wanna end up stuck here or something silly lol Well, eventually everyone’s up for going back to Hostel. Whilst leaving we bump into Alex. Seems surprised we’re leaving. Now the best thing : He says “Let me order you taxis that way you wont get ripped off etc”. Those words are like finding water in a desert 🙂
Sure enough, we’re soon on our way back to hostel. Then Joana asks “Hey, where’s Lucky?!” Hmmm I thought he got in the other taxi? Or did he? Well, it’s not like we can turn back.
Once back at hostel we say our goodbyes to Pezi & Marc & then its off to bed. Man I musta been all of 3 minutes before I was fast asleep!
Morning seemed to come around too soon….well we only had a few hours….& I see Lucky already awake & ask when he got back. Turns out he walked the whole distance from club to hostel! Crazy!

Once everyone’s up, myself Joana & DJ say our goodbyes to Jasi (she’s staying a few more hours for SHOPPING ) & leave for the airport. Once there turns out DJ needs to be at other terminal so we say goodbye.
Soon enough we’re on our flight to Gatwick. Upon arrival I say goodbye to Joana,as she has to go await her connection back to Portugal.
My drive home goes fine. I expected to feel tired, but no problem. Once home the first thing I do is order a Cantonese takeaway! I’m starving 🙂
Next I have a quick look at the film I made in Sofia. Oh crap!! The sound has lots of dropouts & it “comes & goes”. Damn, it’s second time this has happened recently. Oh well, shit happens I guess 🙁
Next I check the forum to see what feedback there is about the show. As expected, everyone is raving about how great the show was. It seems Guano Apes have certainly made their mark on first visit to Bulgaria. Hey, how about 2 nights next time guys ? 🙂

My final thoughts after seeing the first couple of reunion gigs ;

I’ve got to confess, like some others I’m sure, I was sceptical about the reunion. I mean, could this really work again? Is it happening for the right reasons? Seeing the in band interaction @ Braga (both on & offstage) I went away with positive thoughts but still wasn’t 100% convinced.( I think it was a case of a daren’t believe it cos I didn’t want to be disappointed maybe) However, Sofia sealed it for me : I can just see good things. Everyone’s really enjoying themselves. The positive vibe is infectious. This is not just a band getting back together again, it almost feels like a NEW band. It’s hard to describe. I really can see a good future for the band (assuming they want it).
One last thing, i doubt they’ll ever top this show !

Guano Apes, @ Braga, Portugal 10-5-09

00615

This review was updated 7-6-18 (after i found the original files about it on my old PC which described everything. ) Yes, i HAD forgotten some things about the trip 😉  Airport metro violet (E) line to Campanhã 1,45 € takes 33mins Train Porto – Braga : 2,15€ (about one hour trip) concert ticket 12 €

Well who woulda thunk it? Guano Apes back with us in 2009?!!

I guess this one caught all of us on the hop. For once i was out the loop & it came as a total surprise to me also (actually, info was deliberately held back from me which was quite nice as it was such an amazing thing to find out, totally out of the blue. I felt the impact more i guess. Thanks mate 😉 )
So, lets go back to around February of this year : Like a few of the other GA diehards, i was just checking out the forum when someone (I think it was DJ who found it) posted that GA were listed on NovaRock festival website. WTF? Could that really be true? I got a whole bunch of emails asking what i knew about it & i couldn’t give any info as i knew nothing ! So, there was only one thing for it; contact the people who will know 😉 Well, i got a quick mail from someone confirming it was happening & then i had a great phone call from Henning. The first person had kinda jumped the gun (how many minutes ago was the “big meeting”? lol) ,but, i know he was as excited as everyone. Henning gave me info on everything & told me of around 8-9 festivals that were so far confirmed 😉 I was just grinning from ear to ear. GA playing around Europe again What amazing news! Needless to say, i asked if i could post in the forum confirming the reunion. I got the ok, so just watched as the forum got busier & busier. All the old faces started returning & there was such a buzz around the place.
After the initial excitement, the reality of them coming back to do the festival circuit hit me : Its gonna be expensive & if truth be told, i’m not a huge fan of festivals. But hey, its Guano Apes so a bit of effort has to be put in.
It was great chatting with the Guano Maniacs/Usual Suspects arranging where & when we’d meet at the shows. There’s gonna be more than one “reunion” in 2009 !
As on the last tour, the band have been kind enough to allow me to take along my video camera to document the shows i’ll be seeing. I’m hoping at the end of this tour i’ll be given the ok to upload various clips to Youtube for everyone to watch & enjoy. With the scheduling, i don’t think i’ll manage to make it to many shows this time, but lets see how it goes.

So, once again, Let the tyres kiss the ground!

10-5-09 . So here it is ! The first reunion show of Guano Apes. What better place could it be than in Portugal ? They were always pretty big over there, so it certainly fits to kick off there. How will it be? What surprises are in store?
Will it be good, great or, dare i even think it…rubbish ? Who knows, but we’ll soon find out…One of the great things about Guano Apes gigs is that its not just about the band; the fans play a large part in it. Or rather, should i say, its a chance for a bunch of friends to reunite as well.
There’s a few people that used to travel to a lot of GA gigs & whilst the bands been away, we’ve all kept our friendships, even if we haven’t all managed to see each other. Its gonna be great meeting everyone of the “Usual Suspects” again. So, along the way, paths should cross with Jorge & Joana from Portugal, Jasi from Switzerland, Marc,Pezi, Nadine & Gabi from Germany, DJ from Netherlands, Shuki from Israel,Silvia from Italy, & of course, myself from the UK. No doubt more acquaintances will be made along the way. Yes a nice international fan meeting.

As usual, i don’t bother going to bed the evening before my flight, journey to Stansted goes fine & i’m soon on way to Portugal. Upon arrival, i’m greeted by the familiar smile of Jasi. Great to see her again after these years. The various time schedules should work out well: Jasi arrived some 50 minutes before me. Once we meet we then take a train to Campanha where if all goes to plan, Jorge should arrive about 20 minutes after us. Voila! Everything fell into place.Whilst on the train, Jasi gives Jorge a small present.

Later, feeling hungry we try find a cafe or something, but this place is dead. We then go to São Bento as Jorge knows theres a Maccy Ds there.
Its kinda strange as the train station is quite an ornate building & the entrance to Macdonalds is part of the facade. In fact, inside this Maccy Ds it looks quite different to the usual “everything the same” structure of a Macdonalds. Quite a pleasant change really.
Once the snack is finished, we take a train to Braga where we’ve arranged to meet Shuki (we were a little sneeky telling Marc we wouldn’t arrive till later as we wanted some time to look for a birthday present for him) We find Shuki waiting for us in the station & off we wander in search of some kind of gift for Marc. Along the way Shuki tells us that basically Braga is pretty crap for shops & we soon realise he’s right! Add to that the fact its Sunday & most places seem shut,we don’t have much luck.
In the end we have to settle for a small shop that is crammed full of all sorts of souvenirs which is run by some very savvy oriental types. Whilst they don’t seem to speak too much English, they do know when there’s an opportunity to make a sale ! Classic example when it started to rain a little & they pushed their umbrellas!
Once we’ve made the purchases, we then go meet Marc & Pezi. Again, great to see them after these years.
Marc tells us of how lucky their flight was : They took same one as Guano Apes did ! So they had some nice chats & got to see the new merchandise before anyone else. A good coincidence Marc & Pezi DIDN’T have was excess baggage charge …unlike the band 😉
It turns out that Marc has tried to arrange a meet n greet with the band for the hard core fans that have done a lot of travelling & stuck with GA over the years.Cool idea.
As we wander through Braga towards our hotel we also look for some place to eat, but, don’t really find much.We briefly stop & a unsuspecting passer by is enrolled to take a photo of the Usual Suspects (well, most of us anyways). I think this is a fantastic photo of us all.  Walking a little further, we see the occasional fly poster advertising the gig. Dunno if anyone actually managed to remove one or not.  We finally get to the hotel where i checkin then go to my room. The others stay in the reception.
I decide now is a good time to give Henning a ring & see whats happening with soundcheck etc. He tells me that there is basically nothing near the festival site so doesn’t think it worthwhile we go up there too early.
As is always the case with first nights of tours, not everything is running to schedule so he suggests that the little fan meeting would be better scheduled for around 10.30 onwards & i should phone him once we get to venue.During our chat the phone in my room rings. Its Shuki telling me everyone’s gone to Marc & Pezis room & i should go meet them there.
Ah this unassuming room looks no different than others;

There’s already talk of the Maniacs going to venue early so they can secure the front row. For myself a more pressing matter is food. Myself Jorge & Shuki wander off to a supermarket with intention of getting some snacks etc. In the end, the idea of a “full meal” from there is knocked on the head & we just get beerz , crisps & the infamous bottle of port….just who DID have that ? 🙂
Later Shuki goes to meet Joanna & DJ whilst myself & Jorge go back into town in search of a decent place for everyone to have a meal later. After wandering around for ages,we only find a couple of places worthwhile & set off back to the hotel as it starts raining.
It’s decided we’ll all go for a chinese meal & the others will meet us later.
Leaving hotel we seem to “lose” Marc & Pezi. Turns out the idea of getting front row is more important than food.
There was a priceless moment when we were having the meal,or rather, when finished. Shuki asked the waitress for some toothpicks. Seems he understood Portuguese better than she did as she brought him….a calculator 🙂 We all had a laugh at that.
Soon enough we’re on our way to the festival site. Upon arrival it appears doors are running a little late. But i think this worked in favour of the Guano Maniacs as when there was some “rearranging” of the queue, they ended up @ the front.
I go collect my photo/guest pass & just before the doors open i go in the place to check out the layout & see if i can find anyone from the band/crew. Pop backstage & none of the GA crew are around.Pretty sure they’re still away having the meal. I see a bunch of people fooling around. They wear strange clothes with hats that are like pirates lol. What a weird bunch they are! (I later find out they were up onstage!) I’m sure doors will have opened by now so go back out front to see the Usual Suspects. Needless to say, they’ve all got positions on the front row.
Whilst chatting with Jasi she points out that the stage barrier doesnt look very secure.Hell two joining sections are movable very easily & this is before theres a few thousand people pushing against them! Think to myself “this is an accident waiting to happen”. Honestly, this was totally unprofessional & shouldn’t have happened. Speaking from personal experience, I’ve been in a festival crowd when it all went seriously wrong, resulting in deaths. Said festival was the “Monsters of Rock” @ Donington park in 1988.There is a public report covering aspects of the day here http://www.safeconcerts.com/documents/Donintondisaster1988.pdf & it resulted in what is known as the “Purple Guide” .This is an industry guide to health & safety @ concerts etc.So out of the tragedy at least some good came for the future.I guess they weren’t aware of safety standards at this Portuguese gig.
But i digress…back to the good stuff…

Then i hear a voice behind me ” So you’re not answering your phone are you?!!” Its Henning. Seems he tried phoning me a couple of times but with the noise etc i didn’t hear-sorry buddy. Anyways, he’s arranged that everyone can now go backstage for the meet n greet. So “Who wants to come”? There’s a few startled looks of “Oh its Henning!” Then its decision time : go backstage or stay on the front row. In the end there’s just 4 of us that go back. Gradually all the band are with us & everyone’s having nice conversations. Its like those years away never happened. Drinks are given out & then Dennis (?) asks if anyone would like a new T-shirt. Duh! Yes please 🙂 So we are the first to get the new merchandise. They’re actually not selling them here tonight so its even more “unique”.   Its great seeing EVERYONE again. Whilst i’d seen the guys a couple of times @ iO shows, i’d not seen Sandra since the final tour.(Had only briefly spoke on phone whilst she was recording her solo album). But the weird thing is, it just doesn’t seem like its 4 years ago i last saw her. Hugs all round.Damn its great to see everyone again. Its kinda surreal.
Whilst we’re all chatting & drinking there’s a guy that’s filming everything going on. Later, one by one, we all get our cameos on camera. As ever, i prefer to be the other side of camera & get a bit tongue tied. But good ol Dennis steps in & says something to the effect of “Simons been with us for years”   Well finally its time for everyone to go back out front & i realise i should have took some photos. This is typical of me : Always forget to take photos because i’m so involved in whats happening lol. Marcus (tour manager for PT) kindly took a couple.

Surprisingly once we’re back out front its not got much busier & the guys secure pretty decent places.
I go for a wander all around the site & decide best position to start filming the gig would be to the left in amongst the crowd. Then, depending upon how crazy it gets, i’ll either stay there or go down in front of the stage.

THE GIG : I loved how they started the gig. No great fanfare or long intro tape, they just wandered on stage, Sandra said “So here we go again” & they’re straight into “You cant stop me”. A great set opener & for myself a statement in its self : No matter what happens , you cannot stop Guano Apes 🙂
When song finished, Sandra says “Obrigada!…Yeah, i remember”.

Next up Stude starts of “Money & Milk” & he looks so cool in his hat & with the lighting as it is.  About half way through Money & Milk, its as though the crowd have “woke up”. It gets crazy around me & am already considering moving. Sandra says a very nice thing : “Hi guys who came from around the world to stay in the front row for our first concert in 5 years”. “Quietly” is as good as it ever was & then Henning starts a riff i don’t recognise. Could it be a new song? Sandra says “Lets dance a bit” Ah ! The song finally kicks in & i get it : “Candy Love”. This is just fantastic to hear as they’ve never played this live up till now (For the completists, the guys did partly jam C.L. at a gig in Erlangen back in 2001) Damn i just LOVE this! I’ve wanted to hear live for years & now its made it. Not only that, but it seriously rocks…in a cool disco way 🙂 Also cool how in the middle Sandra jams a little “Born to be alive” (Patrick Hernandez ) & the crowd sings it back. I wonder if this song could become the new “Move a little closer” of the set?
Sandra looks down to the front row & says “I like those T-shirts. We don’t have them. We don’t sell them !” She is referring to the original “Guano Maniacs” shirts that people have had since years back.
Next another song i don’t realise what it is. Now this IS a surprise as its one of Sandras solo songs “Do it Again”. I confess i find it really strange that they’re playing this. But it does come over quite well.
During “OYE” the place just goes off. Its obvious a lot of these drunk students only know the GA hit songs. I have trouble keeping hold of the camcorder, let a lone trying to actually film! Decide i’ll move at end of song. But as they start “Pretty in Scarlet” decide i’ll stay one more as this shouldn’t be too rough. So i make my way to the barrier to go film down there & security wont let me in! I’ve got the correct pass but seems this goon doesn’t know. Only thing for it is to work my way through the crowd to the backstage entrance on the opposite side & go try film onstage.  It takes me 2 songs to get through the crowd & would you believe it,the security wouldn’t let me go through.(Even though the same guy was there earlier when i went back a couple of times!) I’m getting annoyed now & tell him i want to see head of security. Finally a bit of luck comes my way: as i’m shouting at the guy, along comes the nice young lady who gave me the pass earlier on. She asks whats the problem & i explain. But when she tells him, hes still having none of it! Finally, he gets on radio to call head security. He comes out & talks to the girl & wanders off backstage! Huh? what now? Couple of mins later he’s back & gestures me to come in the pit area. He tells the other security guys its ok for me to be here filming. Its at times like this i miss Kirsten. She was always great informing security i can film whole show etc & everything pretty much always ran smoothly. By now, I’ve missed Stay, Diokahn & most of Dick.
The version of Break The Line tonight just seems weird. Sandra sings the first verse different & kinda flat. The irony of the song is not lost i guess.
I totally love “Allies” when they have the “fake ending” & restart it. That last section rocks so much & its great to see all the freaking out. Ah now we REALLY get a new song. Officially hasn’t got a name but on setlists it says “Hives Song”. Its a rocker & its so obvious to see how much fun the band have playing this.
Scratch the Pitch is followed by another strange choice ; “Sorry”. So this makes 3 songs from Sandras solo album. It’s not that i dislike the album/songs,its just i find it a bit weird to have them played @ Guano Apes first reunion gig & wonder what the reasoning behind it is.
Next a very interesting track to hear live ; Electric Nights.Towards the end i see that the crowd barrier has moved & for sure it will soon break completely .

Sure enough, during “Sing that song” i hear screams & the barrier is bust. For a moment the front row is almost horizontal as everyone is pushed forward. This is not good. The security seem to think they can just push back the barrier & people behind it & it obviously doesn’t work. There’s heated conversations between crowd & security. Its almost as if they (sec) don’ realise the danger everyone is in.

The band rush through B.I.J. & then leave the stage.
A couple of new sections of barrier are brought in & things look a bit safer now. Upon returning, Henning says ” Ok this is a small piece to calm you down a little bit. We dont want anybody to get hurt.
Maybe you can sing this song with us”. They then do an impromptu instrumental of L.I.A.L. A very wise choice. Afterwards Henning says “its been a pleasure to be back in Portugal. Its been almost 5 years since our last show. Its always been a very warm welcome here in Portugal so we thankyou all” Lords is the last song of the night.
When they bow & say goodbyes Dennis picks up Sandra & its just so touching to see that.

I go find the Maniacs & as expected, everyone’s had a rough time. Poor little Pezi seems to have come off the worse & has even lost her camera during the melee. After some minutes Henning comes out front to chat with us asking how everyone is etc. Everyone appreciates that. General feeling is the Apes were great but the security/barrier situation sucked.

So my thoughts on the first reunion show : I don’t think we could have asked for any better. The whole band seemed to be having a great time up there. Just seeing the smiles & little gestures between them was moving. The set list was very fresh & i’d say a “moving forward” type set. Playing songs that hadn’t been done before was very cool. The new song was a lot of fun & there’s still potential there. The only thing i was unsure about was (so many of) Sandras solo songs. But i wonder if those were played more as a way of saying Sorry (no pun intended) for her solo gig getting cancelled in Portugal? Whatever, i think it kinda worked.
My over all feeling i got from the Braga experience was just how great it is to have GA back. I think they realise it also.
Lets see if they can keep it up !

Guano Apes, @ cch3, Hamburg, Germany 9-2-05

This was a strange gig venue ! But i guess it was a bigger room than Grosse Freiheit

HamlightI noticed that Dennis really seemed in pain during the soundcheck (He’d had an accident before the tour-fell through a roof or something-& was wearing a harness. Not that anyone really knew about it. At least he was a trooper & didn’t cancel the tour 😉 )HamDiochkFriedel came to this one & a pass had not been sorted out for him, so Henning had to come collect him. HamFHHamburg3Hamburg1 hamburg5
