Guano Apes, Uncle Ho, @ Gross Freiheit, Hamburg, Germany, 4-6-00

There was a day off between Berlin & Hamburg gigs. We all traveled to Hamburg & stayed in a very swish hotel (once again, pinch me!”) Carlos Santana was in town, so a few went to see his show. 196303_1625882682345_5351431_n

The show was filmed for a mini documentary on Guano Apes. I asked the film crew what station it would be broadcast on. Upon hearing i’d traveled over from the UK, the director asked if he could do a short interview with me! It was so funny as i’d never in my wildest dreams expected anything like this could happen. I mean, i’m already living life well what with travelling on the tour bus, having a AAA tour pass & now this ?!!

Well this was a dream come true, thanks to Henning ! My first AAA laminate & i get to travel on the tour bus! Pinch me! Is this really real?!! When the band arrived, i was took to the tour bus where i met Axel. Apparently, this was the first tour where the band traveled separately to the road crew. It was all so different & exciting. I felt truly honored to be allowed into this small circle & i’ll never forget this & all the other amazing times i had with the band & crew.

God was that a L-O-N-G walk(CLIMB!) up the hill! Strange sort of outdoor gig. Really wasn’t a crush down the front….almost too “nice” I was more than knackered at this gig. Afterwards, we waited to try meet the band. I think we only saw Shirley in a car. We hadn’t planned this one very well as had no hotel or anything. I think we spent the night on some disused railway carriages ?

3 days of rock in Germany. Some brilliant acts & some no so brilliant haha. We went on a bus trip with accommodation also provided a few miles away from festival. This was my first festival abroad since going to Germany in 1984. Things have changed some what 😉 We queued for something silly like 12hours to get front row for Garbage. They played in a massive (15,000 capacity??) tent. It got so hot in there that there was moisture coming down the tent. Eeeewww! We had some trouble with a girl trying to push her way into front row….until she tried it with Mel & got a good kicking & words to the effect of “Fuck off you German Bitch” lol. Nowadays, the festival is so big that the “Alterna Tent” moved from a tent to a proper (big) open air stage. We were lucky to go to the festival before it got too big. I think Mel also did a bungee jump at this show. Oh yeah, we knew Rurik from the UK dates & i said to the others ,”I bet you i can find him”. Sure enough, i saw him walk by & we met up !

This was an (un) organised bus trip we went on. At the time,it was an uncommon thing for peeps to be travelling to other countries for gigs. There was only a couple of companies doing it. We had a hotel in Frankfurt the night before the gig. It was still a long drive to Karlsruhe though ! When we got to the stadium the next day,we weren’t early enough: still queued up outside whilst Accept were on.We saw every other band though. This was also the last but one gig that Dave lee roth played with Van Halen !! A good experience, but, the bus journey was a killer.
